THE CORE

I was listening to a yoga podcast this week and they were discussing the term core. There are many ways people in the fitness and yoga world define the “core”.  It got me thinking about what we at Hippie Yoga consider the core, why it is important and how we use it in yoga.

What is the Core?

What exactly is the core? The core refers to the muscles in your midsection, including your abdominals, back, and pelvis. It's the powerhouse of your body, providing stability and balance for nearly all movements.

Muscles Included in the Core

The core is not just about having a flat stomach or visible abs; it's a complex network of muscles that work together to support your entire body. The main muscles included in the core are:

  • Rectus Abdominis: Often referred to as the "six-pack" muscles, these run along the front of your abdomen.

  • Transverse Abdominis: Located deep within the abdomen, these muscles wrap around your sides and spine, providing stability and support.

  • Internal and External Obliques: These muscles are found on the sides of your abdomen and help with twisting and bending movements.

  • Erector Spinae: Running along your spine, these muscles help maintain good posture and spinal alignment.

  • Pelvic Floor Muscles: These muscles support the organs in the pelvis and contribute to core stability.

  • Diaphragm: This muscle plays a key role in breathing and also assists in core stabilization.

Why is the Core Important?

The core is crucial for many reasons, impacting your physical health and overall quality of life. Here’s why a strong core is important:

  • Stability and Balance: A strong core helps you maintain proper balance and stability, making everyday activities like walking, running, and standing easier and safer.

  • Improved Posture: Strengthening your core muscles can lead to better posture, reducing the risk of back pain and other musculoskeletal issues.

  • Enhanced Performance: Whether you’re practicing yoga, playing sports, or engaging in other physical activities, a strong core can improve your performance by providing a solid foundation for movement.

  • Injury Prevention: A well-conditioned core helps protect your spine and reduces the likelihood of injuries, especially in the lower back.

  • Functional Fitness: Core strength is essential for daily tasks, from lifting groceries to bending down to tie your shoes. It enhances your ability to perform these activities with ease and without strain.

How do we use the Core in a Yoga Class?

In our yoga classes we incorporate core engagement throughout various poses and sequences to help you build strength and awareness. Here’s how we use the core in our practice:

  • Support in Poses While other muscles might be the primary focus is some poses the core adds support and strength to the whole body while in the pose.  Bridge pose primarily strengthens the lower back and glutes, engaging the core helps lift the hips higher and supports spinal alignment.

  • Balancing poses: Balancing poses require deep core engagement to maintain stability. As we strengthen and engage the core the wobbling in balance poses can dissipate.

·       In between poses: We encourage mindful core engagement, particularly during transitions from pose to pose in a flow class.  A stronger core can help support the body as it moves, whether in and out of yoga poses or in our daily lives.

Understanding and strengthening your core is a fundamental part of your yoga journey. Embrace the power within and focus on your core. Growing strong from the inside out.
