The Act of Meditating vs The State of Meditation

Writer's picture: Hippie YogaHippie Yoga

Many people begin their meditation practice with the expectation that every time they sit, they will enter a deep, peaceful state of meditation. But meditation isn’t always about achieving that stillness—it’s about the practice itself.

The Act of Meditating

The act of meditating is the practice—the sitting, the focusing, and the gentle return of the mind to a single point, whether it’s the breath, a mantra, or a sound. It’s the commitment to showing up, even when the mind is busy, even when distractions arise. This is the “doing” of meditation.

The State of Meditation

The state of meditation is different. It’s the space between thoughts—the effortless stillness that sometimes arises when the mind settles. This state cannot be forced; it comes and goes naturally. Some days, it may appear easily, and other days, it may feel just out of reach. And that’s okay.

Embracing the Practice

The key to a fulfilling meditation practice is understanding that the act of meditating is valuable, whether or not you reach that deep state of stillness. Each time you sit and refocus your mind, you are strengthening your ability to find peace, presence, and awareness in your daily life.

So, the next time you meditate, release expectations and simply commit to the practice. The state of meditation may come, but even if it doesn’t, know that the act of meditating is enough.
